5 valid alternatives to Super Smash Bros. (And the crossover born from the Nickelodeon tournament)

Super Smash Bros. is among the most popular fighting game series. For the few who do not know it it is a crossover fighting game which initially included some Nintendo characters such as Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Jigglypuff and Samus.
With the succession of chapters, fighters have also been added of Mario's house as well as those of third-party brands such as the icon of SEGA Sonic, Snake from Metal Gear Solid, Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, Ryu from Street Fighter and even Joker from Persona 5 as the dlc of the chapter for Switch, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Super Smash Bros. a crossover fighting game

Unlike the usual fighting games there is no life bar: the goal is to knock opponents out of the arena where you fight with punches, kicks, weapons and special items.
The higher the percentage of damage taken (present in the hud respectively for each character), the greater the chance that they will end up off-screen.

This title is ideal to play in the company of friends between a pizza and a nice cold beer but it is also a very good competitive. Numerous official and unofficial tournaments are organized every year.
A competition was even organized by the cartoon television channel Nickelodeon. For the occasion, the artist who takes care of the SpongeBob storyboards has published the funny mash-up which you can see in the poster below.

5 valide alternative a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

In the case of you are not a Nintendo Switch owner or just feel like try similar titles we have for you 5 valide alternative a Super Smash Bros.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale (Il Super Smash Bros di PlayStation)

In case you're wondering, no, it's not a Fortnite or Pubg title. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is a fighting game for PlayStation 3 and PSVita developed by SuperBot Entertainment and SCE Santa Monica Studio and released in 2012 that stars some heroes of the Sony console world.

In the roster there are Natan Drake, Coole, Kratos, PaRappa the Rapper, Mishima, Jak & Daxter, Rachet & Clank, Sly Cooper and others, for a total of 20 characters (with dlc) forced to fight each other due to a mysterious force.

It was labeled by many as "the smash of the poor". In fact, the gameplay is very similar to that of the Nintendo title. However there are some differences: the "smash" bar fills with orbs and instead of a single final smash there are twothe three different levels.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale: Smash but with characters from the PlayStation world (who have not already been included in Smash or to which Sony has the rights).

Another change from Smash can be found in the arenas, inspired, yes, by the worlds of the various playable characters but mixed with those of another game. To give you an example, the arena of Bioshock Infinite, Columbia, is invaded by the characters of Twisted Metal.

There was also an online component, however the servers have been closed for about a year.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale was a good title unfortunately did not achieve the desired success. In my opinion, one of the main reasons could be precisely the lack of iconic characters like Crash and Spyro, fundamental figures of the PlayStation world, who unfortunately have not been included for rights issues. Other heroes like Snake were already in Smash and at this point it was impossible to insert them.

Only one year after its release, in 2013, there was talk of a sequel but the idea was probably discarded since six years later we no longer have any news.

Brawlhalla (Norse mythology meets Smash)

Much more famous for its free to play nature is Brawlhalla, by Blue Mammouth Games, an independent studio subsequently acquired by Ubisoft.
The game has mechanics very similar to Super Smash Bros. with the only difference of one cartoon graphics in two dimensions.

The roster currently includes 46 characters from the world of Norse mythology called legends as well as a guest star like Rayman and crossovers like Adventure Time and Hellboy. The game is constantly updated with new characters and events every 2-3 months.
In all there are about 15 arenas with a Nordic and non-Nordic setting, in addition to those under license, such as that of the aforementioned Adventure Time.

As in Smash they are present numerous items to use during the battle such as proximity mines, spikes and personal weapons for each legend.

The character design of the characters is cute. It is mainly inspired by Norse mythology but there are also pirates, gangsters and crossovers with video game or cartoon characters.

The title was released for Windows PC, MacOS, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the fall of 2017 and for Switch in that of 2018. As already stated, it is a title free to play so it costs you absolutely nothing to try it.

Cartoon Network: Punches at Will (Jonny Bravo better than Captain Falcon)

At the beginning of the article we talked about a crossover artwork with Nicklodeon cartoon characters. Well, such a game exists and is called Cartoon Network: Punches at will.

Title is very similar to Smash in mechanics with the characters and arenas from the most famous cartoons of the television station for children and teenagers.
There are characters and worlds from Samurai Jack, Ben 10, The Powerpuff Girls, Billy and Mandy, Jonny Bravo, Daxter's Laboratory and many more for a total of 26 fighters.

The strong point of this Smash clone is probably the very extensive and quality roster. How much fun must it be to fight as Jonny Bravo?

The game, in addition to the classic singleplayer and local multiplayer, has an original story mode: Ben 10 villain Vigilax threatens destruction of all the worlds of Cartoon Network. Similarly to the story of Smash, some characters turn bad, but are freed by the protagonists and team up to defeat the evil Vigilax.

It is a less complex title than Smash, but just as good. It was made by Papaya Studio and released in Europe by Deep Silver between 2011 and 2012 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii and Nintendo 3DS consoles.

The game also features a scrolling fighting game sequel called Cartoon Network: Battle Crashers released in 2016 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo 3DS. It includes characters from new cartoons such as Steven Universe, Adventure Time and Gumball but the quality of the title it is quite poor compared to the predecessor.

Shrek Super Slam (Orc Barrel)

While browsing the internet we happened to see the meme "Shrek joins the battle". The funny thing is that there is actually a very similar game called Smash Shrek Super Slam.

The title was released for the sixth generation consoles (PlayStation 2, Xbox, Gamecube, Gba and Nintendo DS) and PC and includes a roster of 20 characters and settings from the world of fairy tales.

Did you know that despite the age of the title and its licensed nature, Shrek Super Slam still has a community of tournament-organizing enthusiasts today?

The gameplay resumes from that of Smash, with the difference of a free movement in three dimensions. In the game we will have to punch and kick opponents to fill in the writing “SLAM” under our icon.

Once filled we can carry out the special move with the same name to eliminate the opponent. The game is won by the player with the most slams.

The one just described is the classic "Melee" mode but there is also the "King of the hill" whose purpose is to knock enemies down the hill to earn Slam and the "Slammageddon" mode in which each punch counts as a single Slam.
In my opinion Shrek Super Slam is one of the most successful licensed titles.

Lethal League (When Smash plays baseball)

To conclude, we offer you a title a little different from the usual Smash fighting game, but which in many respects is reminiscent of the Nintendo title. Lethal league by Team Reptile is a 2014 indie released on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The gameplay follows the mechanics of "hitting the bullet", that is, up to a maximum of four players hit and bounce a baseball that increases exponentially in speed with each hit.

Players who are caught off guard and hit they lose a life and move on to the next round. When all lives run out, the player is eliminated. Elimination continues until the last survivor.

The graphic style and the soundtrack make this indie a must have!

You will immediately be captivated by both the simple and fun gameplay and the graphics and music inspired by the SEGA Jet Set Radio game. A fun pastime to share with friends in local or online battles.

The only flaw is perhaps the roster it includes only six characters who enjoy, however, an excellent character design as well as having different skills and special moves. Considering the price, which is quite low, it is a must have.

And the sequel Blaze

The sequel has also been available for some time Lethal League Blaze which includes a graphic sector renewed in three dimensions, a new soundtrack and a more varied roster.

These were some alternatives to Super Smash Bros. which we advise you to recover. Maybe you have already tried some of these titles or you know some valid alternatives, why not come and tell us about it in the comments?
