It's usually pretty obvious that video game speedruns are about finesse and precision. Sometimes, however, to break every record it seems that it is enough throw your Mario Kart 64 racing car into a wall multiple times.
That's exactly what Beck “abney317” Abney did.
Abney has long been considered one of the best current speedrunners in Mario Kart 64. He holds (and has held) a number of records, including both All Cups categories.
His latest venture is based on a discovery by fans of the game. In fact, several players have recently realized that, running against a wall on the edge of the slope at a precise angle and speed, players can fool the game into believing they have completed a full round.
The speedrunner then fielded the technique, and immediately immortalized the feat on YouTube.
The end result may seem simple, but like most speedrunning techniques, it is the result of hard work and dedication.
The technique used by Abney to set the world record on the Luigi Raceway was achieved thanks to a new wall-clipping technique. Mario Kart 64 players recently discovered that, under the right circumstances, you can simply go through walls and corners, which is technically the phenomenon that Abney takes advantage of.
A complex process explained by the following video:
In breaking his record Abney undoubtedly "played dirty", but this is news that proves how much the classics still have many little secrets to hide.
But now we are curious: are you one of those players who love retrogaming always looking for new easter-eggs or secrets in the games of the past? And have you ever come across cases of this type?
