[Update] Sonic The Hedgehog 2 officially announced
The arrival of the second film dedicated to the blue hedgehog is confirmed. They communicated it Paramount Pictures e Sega Sammy, development has started. The film will again have Jeff Fowler as director and Pat Casey and Josh Miller as screenplay.
As for the production, this will be up to Toby Ascher, Neal H. Moritz, Toru Nakahara, Hajime and Aruki Satomi and Tim Miller.
We can't wait to give you new information on the film that is likely to be released between 2021 and 2022.
The Sonic The Hedgehog movie released earlier this year it turned out to be a real blockbuster. In the first week, the blue hedgehog also surpassed the "competitor" Pokémon Deatective Pikachu who had hit the box office last year. All of this despite the Covid-19 epidemic exploded in the West at the end of March (about a month after the release of the film).
Ivo Gersovich, the head of the Sonic Studio brand recently commented on the success of the film on a Reddit topic explaining that the film helped the franchise to regain popularity.
The success of the film had a positive impact on the brand by bringing a new generation of fans and reaching fans in areas of the world otherwise inaccessible to us alone.
The team and I have built the Sonic brand over the past five years and those who may have initially been "against" when the new team was formed have turned into "tail winds" (strong support).
From the inside, working on a brand previously seen as "nostalgic" that has become very "relevant" is like pushing a big snowball to help it pick up its speed and then it starts to gain momentum and starts moving faster and faster - and then suddenly it's just about trying to keep up.
Not just a sequel: new opportunities after the Sonic movie
Gersovich says the Sonic franchise is now a "stimulating place" and the success of the film has opened the door to new opportunities. He wasn't very specific about it but it is possible that in addition to the almost guaranteed sequel (there is an easter egg in the scenes after the credits to confirm it) we could see films about other Sega icons. In short, our dream of seeing a Smash Bros. Cinematic Universe may not be so far away.
However, the Sonic movie didn't always have an easy time. Many of you will remember the first movie trailer in which Sonic had a terrible design which generated an endless amount of complaints (and funny memes). Luckily the team working on the film decided to listen to the audience and came up with a new look, finally worthy for the blue hedgehog.
The rework of the design cost the production studio time and money (the film was postponed from November to February) but it was absolutely worth it: the film grossed $ 146 million in the US alone and $ 167,67 million in other states for a total of $ 306,7 in total all over the world.
Anyway, although this is the best launch week for a film focused on a videogame character, Sonic The Hedgehog is not by far the highest grossing player. The first place goes to the Warcraft film The Beginning which grossed $ 428 million, Detective Pikachu which grossed $ 433 million, Rampage which grossed just under $ 428 million and the now forgotten (but not ugly) Prince. of Persia: the Sands of Time which earned $ 336 million.
The Sonic movie was directed by Jeff Fowler, a director nominated for an Oscar in 2004 for his animated short film Gopher Broke. Ben Schwartz also participates in the film as the voice of Sonic (voiced by us by Renato Novara) and the mythical Jim Carrey in the role of the evil Robotnik.
In short, it is a golden period for videogame transpositions in cinema and TV series. The Witcher Netflix series came out last year, The Last of Us is in the works on HBO. At the cinema will arrive (after many changes of direction the Uncharted movie with Tom Holland in the role of a young Natan Drake and the Monster Hunter movie. Honestly we can't wait!
