The writer is convinced that the value of a game lies in its continuously calling the player to the screen, even if only for about ten minutes.
Star Drift Evolution (we already spoil the final review) not only did he succeed in doing this, but he was able to transform himself into a moment of reflective flow of great emotional value, wisely exploiting his mixture of elements to be fun and appetizing, so much so as to make you want more and more a further bite.
The game of Catze he was able to act as a sign of interruption between the various daily activities, going to gnaw time in a completely natural way to the detriment of other products, with greater minutes and complexities.
From accelerated to deparata, Star Drift Evolution convinced us and it has all the potential to do this with you too, so now we tell you a little more in detail.
Cos’è Star Drift Evolution?
Let's start with the boring questions right away: Star Drift Evolution it's a racing arcade (but not too much) with top-down view (but not only) equipped with a driving model particularly fun completely skill-based (this however is quite beyond any reasonable doubt).
From a content point of view, the title puts on the field beyond 75 miscellaneous track e 50 different vehicles to drive, each characterized by a different weight, reactivity and statistics. The final result is a series of winning ingredients that, moreover, intersect with each other with greatness.
All this content package is presented to the player with a low poly aesthetic and a slightly spartan interface, for an overall visually unpleasant but certainly functional aesthetic for the final purpose: have fun.
The tutorial immediately puts the cards on the table: in Star Drift Evolution all that matters is ilearn to read both your vehicle and the terrain on which you will run. Each car, based on the sum of certain characteristics, reacts differently to asphalt, earth, snow, ice or sand; dips, bumps, holes, protuberances and bumps will be dealt with dynamically by running from skid to skid, being careful to mix accelerator and brake correctly in order to obtain the best possible outcome.
The ingredients at the base of the SDE driving system are few but very good: in addition to the aforementioned accelerator we also find the paired brake and handbrake, two mechanisms with which it will be necessary to make friends immediately in order to be able to dominate the rankings.
The normal brake is softer, allowing the player to easily control the drift / drift while the handbrake allows you to cut corners more aggressively, acting as a perfect tool for the most difficult corners or for the most difficult cars. ungovernable (provided you have a good grip value).
The end result is that of a simple to learn but hard to master gameplay as the English speakers would say, with a very high skill ceiling even if only if you want to complete the career mode by getting the maximum number of stars in every single challenge.
Do you remember when we told you that Star Drift Evolution is a top-down video game? Well we lied to you or at least we did in part. We lied to you because the game exploits also the top down view to offer the player his playful proposal, offering it together with a classic view with third person perspective and a camera positioned on the hood of the car. Among the visuals made available there are a couple freely customizable, in order to allow each player to find the perfect point of view to be able to continue in the adventure.
We played the title using the third-person view, an element that has enhanced its dynamism to the point that we prefer to think so compared to a classic top down view. The chiselling of the gameplay is such that it has brought the writer several times in the state of flow, that is, that optimal experience where concentration is totally dedicated to what you are doing. This element is also underlined by the colonna sonora which travels on medium BPM with traces of enveloping electronics, between retrowave, chiptune and more calming pieces.
Initial D.rift Evolution
We are talking about career mode because the main method that the software house used for to evolve the driving style and knowledge of the player it is contained within the aforementioned modality. The game presents the player with a selection of tracks divided by category that can be progressively unlocked through theobtaining a currency called stars
The latter are delivered to the player only if requests are met such as reaching certain positions or certain times, of progressive difficulty. Completing each race leads the player to obtain credits which he can spend in an internal shop to change vehicles; here too, even here cars are made available only when a certain number of stars is obtained, preventing the player from buying generally more powerful cars too soon.
Getting to the bottom of the career mode, in terms of content, is not a particularly difficult challenge despite the large number of tracks available: completing it 100%, on the other hand, is a big ballgame that is only the introductory fragment of a mission impossible. even bigger: go to excel (or at least try) in the online rankings.
The Spartan interface of Star Drift Evolution makes it clear right away: the title is competitive and the statistics of our time we find a nice writing WR who is there to remind us that someone has completed a lap on the track that is making us tear up calendars in a fraction of our seconds.
The most competitive aspect of the title is repeatedly mentioned in the UI allowing the player to watch the replays of different players based on a convenient selector present in the track menu; needless to say that, watching certain drifting, it is impossible not to get a mixture of admiration and terror for thevery high skill reached by certain players.
If you are afraid of comparing yourself with others but still want to make the most of the product, it is impossible to overlook one feature winning di Star Drift Evolution, that is the presence of multiplayer locally. To be able to treat yourself to a few evenings that can strengthen (or crack) a relationship forever, equip yourself with four controllers, a supply of chips / fizzy drinks and a large enough sofa: they'll think about it as a glue. SDE with great success.
Few polygons and lots of fun
The technical department of Star Drift Evolution it is perhaps the thing that needs least explanation on the face of the earth. The graphics low-poly it is basically required for a title without big budget behind it and it is perfectly functional to the final purpose of the game: to allow players to have fun without slowdowns, regardless of the number of elements visible on the screen.
In this Star Drift Evolution it is basically perfect.
The graphic style is dry, perhaps aesthetically a little anonymous, but perfectly integrated within the package that the developers have put together. The only defect we encountered is an excessive opacity of the particle effect of the dust that makes certain tracks a real hell to cross, especially if you are unable to disconnect the other machines in the first moments of the game.
Instead, a different speech could be made for theinterface, so spartan that, at times, it is even too basic. Aesthetically, you could work in a bit more to make it visually pleasing but, in this case, we are talking about a feature that does not affect the core of the game in the least: fun.
Star Drift Evolution's approach to the genre is not revolutionary from a playful point of view nor from a visual point of view and yet it is enough to be a product that is worth every single penny. The gameplay loop the basis of the game is chiseled enough to allow anyone to dig deep, innervating at the base of a delicate relationship between power, acceleration, traction and weight. The fact that all this is set within rather short tracks and that it is supported by a very comfortable restart system that starts everything from scratch within 0.5 seconds allows the maintenance of the player's flow, for a title that basically never ceases to have a hold on who plays.
Undoubtedly, something better could have been done, at least in the order of the user interface but as far as the game factor is concerned, Star Drift Evolution gets a placement worthy of the very first place.
In conclusion
Star Drift Evolution is a video game with just a few elements, all of which fit perfectly within an overall excellent product. A lot of tracks and a lot of cars manage, in combination with a driving system as simple as it is really deep, to offer an exhilarating overall experience both in single player and chaotic in multiplayer, where the best is offered by the local experience. Ultimately Star Drift Evolution turns out to be a very welcome surprise within the 2021 videogame landscape, able to give a lot of fun at the modest cost of a slightly spartan user interface.
