You remember that Surgeon Simulator? That game where, with a crazy hand, you have to carry out complex surgical operations, which are usually sent to the cow?
Table Manners, developed by Echo Chamber Games and published by Curve Digital, is his spiritual heir, created for all those who prefer to train before a gallant outing and who want to be sure to make the evening perfect. But as you well know, romantic dinners don't always go the right way.
The perfect date, or maybe not?
It's Valentine's Day, you want to take your sweetheart out to dinner (or the person you want to conquer), but only after sitting at the table do you realize that there is something wrong with your hand.
Is it controlled by a higher force, as if something stupid and uncoordinated has taken the reins? Sounds like a nightmare, right? Because it will be almost impossible to pour you a drink without demolishing everything around you ...
It all depends on your hand (and it's not the first time, is it?). An enormous responsibility weighs on it: the success of the dinner. If everything goes well, there will be another appointment, otherwise it will be your hand to cure your loneliness and repeat the level until you get a good result.
Take me to dinner, but you also have to feed me
Imagine: after chatting with someone for a while, you go out for dinner and…. And all it will do is observe you and make you do everything. From ordering, to pouring drinks, to seasoning their food, to feeding them a brownie.
You may like this situation or not, they are tastes, but doing all the actions described above with a virtual hand with ambiguous controls… It's damn fun.
It's like finding yourself in one of those confused and anxious dreams, where you try to do something (such as dialing a phone number or other simple tasks) but you can't, you try and try again but your hands don't work as they should and you give up, sinking into panic. There is only one difference: it is not a dream, but reality.
Table Manners lets you experience what it would be like to be in your teammate's body when playing online and is both exhausting and the coolest thing ever.
However much one may try, the hand will make some disaster. For example, I spilled red wine on my first date with a beautiful blonde. It can happen.
Let's be serious
From a technical point of view, the game works well. I don't want to tell you about the controls because it is at the heart of the game to be complicated from this point of view.
- Graphically it is a game that works: in its minimalism, it has everything you need. It's clean, no frills, and that's what makes it captivating. Table Manners doesn't need great graphic stunts to be a good game.
- The music reminds me of what you hear in the spa, a sweet background of lounge jazz that you cuddle your ears. Isn't that what we all want as the soundtrack of our first date?
- As you progress, the levels become more and more complex. Depending on the type of restaurant where the appointment will take place, there will be different "adversities". As much as you can get used to the controls, it will never be easy and this is one of the aspects that I appreciated the most.
Conclusions
Table Manners it made me have fun. It's a simple game but at the same time it's not and that's what makes it perfect for when you just want to switch off your brain and have a laugh. I would replay it endlessly and I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun with friends, considering we only share one neuron and can use it in turns.
