Since the presentation of DualSense, the official controller of PlayStation 5, we wanted to put the point on its ability to transmit sensations through the tactile feedback, that is, a technology capable of making the player feel what is happening on the screen through a stimulus of the sense of touch.
In video games it is easy to identify thanks to sight and hearing, but the same cannot be said for the other senses, including touch which, apart from the vibration, is not tickled and aroused by what the controlled character is. executing at that moment, since it is not us in person who touch an object or drive a vehicle.
But according to the words of some developers, with DualSense this will change. The dev Mike Bithell and the composer Austin Wintory they talked about their feelings on an IGN podcast stating that the PS5 controller will be great thanks to the haptic feedback.
Wintory focused on how DualSense and sound engine will be perfectly integrated. In fact, Unreal Engine 5 uses the Tempest Engine which will allow you to simulate the sound of every single drop of rain during a storm.
Bithell, on the other hand, said that the raindrops will not only be felt by hearing, but also with a tactile sensation that will make us believe we are actually there. On how this will be possible, Bithell did not want to go too far. Sony had already discussed the thing saying that the DualSense will try to communicate the feeling of walking in the mud or the tension of a string. Furthermore, the joypad could simulate the feeling of driving on two different road surfaces.
These considerations are in addition to those made by Szymon Ergmanski, project manager of Bloober Team, the Polish studio of Layers of Fear, Observer and the upcoming The Medium. In his opinion, the controller's haptic feedback will be able to make horror video games more immersive.
The DualSense features are an excellent opportunity to provide additional information about the setting and to create more suspense during the experience. All of this is good for the horror genre.
If all these rumors and advances were to prove true, even if only in part, we could really say that we have reached a turning point in gaming.
