Tree of Savior

How to get Ragnarok Online fans upset

Why review a game officially released a year ago? Because it's not THAT game anymore, of course!

When Tree of Savior was officially released in May 2016, there were many perplexed faces, despite the fact that the game enjoyed the hype of being the true sequel to the famous Ragnarok Online. Bugs, graphical deficits, class imbalances and unhappy game design choices swooped like a chainsaw on the game's branches, stripping it of lifeblood before it even managed to take root.

But let's go in order. The character is a Revelator, which is a nice 2D sprite destined to save the world. He will incidentally spend a good deal of time saving goddesses of questionable physiognomy and defeating enemies who are certainly pleasing to the eye if not in manner. While simple on paper, the storyline is probably the most extensive of all MMORPGs. It spreads over hundreds of maps, accumulating levels and experience with increasingly intriguing and epic missions (except when, at the honorable level 210, they send you to pick potatoes). You can choose between two starting cities, Klaipeda and Orsha: both with their own storyline that then flows into the central one.

Positive note? The game automatically highlights the main and side quests for you.

A negative? The main quests give stat points, so they will still all be done if you want to complete the character.

One character, more than 80 classes. Long live customization!

Character building is definitely the most important feature of Tree of Savior. If everyone starts from one of four classes, warrior, mage, archer and cleric, anything can happen from then on. In addition to the character levels, there are class levels ranging from 1 to 15, at which time you have to choose another class from the initial branch. Obviously, no one forbids taking initial classes to high levels, as they all have unique abilities. The system is incredible and gigantic, which makes it difficult to create the first characters. The suggestion is to pop into the official forums / Reddit and search or ask for info about what you want to do. Better to avoid finding yourself with a character who suddenly becomes useless as happens elsewhere… we are looking at you PoE. I promised myself that if IMC was able to balance everything, I would go to Korea to personally shake hands with those developers. Luckily for me I saved myself the trip.

Some classes work better than others and, as was to be expected, a "meta" of classes that everyone wants versus those left in a corner has formed almost immediately.

Does this make them less playable? Actually no, they are all very interesting. But if one is aiming for the top then the choice of classes is very narrow, given the large domain of a few classes.

Please note: just in these days an event was launched following a complete update of the combat system. Everything could change!

Gameplay or should we say Grindplay!

There's no point in hiding, in order to truly appreciate ToS you have to love grinding. As a Korean MMORPG and spiritual sequel to RO, grinding is a key part of the Tree of Savior gameplay experience. Whether it is to make money, items or experience, grinding will be increasingly important for the character to grow. After all we are talking about the "new" Ragnarok, if one does not have to invest hours and hours of grind what good would it be?

Despite this, in the last year the game has become more and more attractive for casual players. Several tricks, such as the addition of vouchers that can complete dungeons instantly and continuous events that significantly increase the experience gained, have made it less hardcore oriented.

In conclusion, ToS is a game that does not disappoint in the face of knowing what you are getting into. That set of nostalgia and innovation that will keep you attached to your PC for hours and hours without the possibility of escape.
