According to new market research by a group of independent analysts, in the first quarter of 2021 PS5 would have sold more than double the Xbox X and S Series.
According to data from Ampere Analysis (which released some global sales figures for the two consoles, as well as those of Nintendo Switch), Sony sold 2,83 million PS5 systems to consumers from January to March this year, while Microsoft sold 1,31 million Xbox Series X and S consoles..
These are estimates that must also take into account supply constraints such as the global shortage of semiconductors which made it harder to find stock of PS5 and Xbox Series X, but which give some ideas.
"Under these conditions, both versions of the PlayStation 5 combined outperformed both versions of the Xbox Series by more than 2 to 1", Wrote analyst Piers Harding-Rolls, adding however:
"Sony will be pleased that its PS4 market share continues into the new generation, but it is very difficult to assess real demand in the current market conditions".
This is good news for Sony, but even better news comes for Nintendo: Switch sales in the first quarter of 2021 exceed 5,86 million, surpassing both PlayStation and Xbox.
In this case however we are facing a trend of constant growth for the Japanese multinational, which closed last fiscal year with one of its best overall results and it has not suffered the ax of the production crisis caused by the lockdown. Furthermore, we are talking about a console with a consolidated production cycle.
