It used to be called Gods and Monsters. Then after the 2019 announcement came radio silence and the smell of vaporware. But now, at the Ubisoft Forward 2020, the game has risen from its ashes with a new name, Immortals Fenyx Rising, and a new trailer released for the occasion.
The game director Scott Phillips speaks directly of the development of the game, the postponement of which allowed him to have the time necessary to reach the fullness of his creative vision; in this perspective also the change of the title, which better reflects the gaming experience that we will soon be able to try: the title in fact will arrive next December 3rd, and will be cross-gen. A free demo will be released on Stadia later this year.
The game is defined as a third person open world action-adventure set in a fantasy world inspired by Greek mythology. Phoenix, the protagonist of the title, is shipwrecked on this mysterious island. Here we will be greeted by Hermes, the custodian of a prophecy that sees us as the only saviors of the gods, incurred in the threat of Typhon. In the course of the game, therefore, we will meet many of the gods of the Greek pantheon, starting with Zeus. Obviously, the gods encountered will give us various powers and abilities with which to customize our fighting style. There will also be a strong theory of objects and items of equipment with which to adorn our alter-ego, who can also change sex: from the very first moments of the game we will in fact be offered the possibility to modify the aesthetics of Phoenix at will, transforming it as we like.
Of course we will also have to contend with formidable enemies, such as giants, cyclops and harpies: in short, all the possible bestiary of Hellenic mythology, albeit with a graphic design far from the brutality of God of War, and more like a colorful battle royale. On the other hand, the exploration of the world is clearly of Zeldian inspiration: you will be able to wander without borders from the beginning of the game and fly over the whole map, divided into thematic macro-areas, which will be dotted here and there with environmental puzzles, secrets and puzzle sections.
A nice opening of the event for Ubisoft, which pulls out of the hat a project considered missing and renders it in dazzling form. Sure, Fenyx Rising Immortals it doesn't seem anything revolutionary, but the colorful and inspired graphic aspect and the varied gameplay are points in favor of a production capable of not disfiguring both current and next-gen.
