At the reveal of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, shown during Sony's Future of Gaming event, a bit of confusion has made its way among players and also among insiders about the nature of the title.
After seeing the trailer, many have wondered what Miles Morales actually was: a full game, a spin-off, an expansion? The lack of an official wording led to the initial confusion. Sony and Insomniac Games took care of the situation.
It's not Spider-Man 2 and there were few doubts about this, but the development team wanted to reiterate that it will still be a complete and autonomous experience of the Marvel universe.
It can be categorized as an expansion, of course, but standalone, so it doesn't need a copy of the main game. Additionally, the Bloomberg site reported that Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be smaller than a traditional console game but will be sold as a standalone product. Bloomberg's source compared Miles Morales to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which can be considered as an expansion of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, but in reality completely independent and with the duration of a canonical chapter of the series.
Simon Rutter, executive vice president and head of European commercial operations at Sony Interactive Entertainment, also told The Telegraph that Marvel's Spider-Man itself will be playable on PS5 (which is to be expected given that the game was used as a "tech demo" to demonstrate the power of the consul), without this affecting the autonomy of Miles Morales.
