Terraria: Otherworld was announced in February 2015 as a spin-off of the hugely popular Terraria sandbox. The aim of the game should have been to purify the world of corruption by finding and activating the purification towers that would repel its spread. The main idea for this new title was to include more strategy e RPG elements, like a mechanic for defending towers and beyond a skill tree.
But a year ago, the owner of Terraria Re-Logic restarted Otherworld development after leaving the Dutch developer Engine Software in favor of Pipeworks, the studio that had already done the rewrite of Terraria on consoles and mobile devices, due to some problems with the development of the game. Now, Re-Logic has completely canceled Otherworld, suggesting that development with Pipeworks also didn't go well.
Re-Logic itself commented on the official Terraria forum, explaining what were the reasons that led to the cancellation of Otherworld.
Our team has a clear vision for this game - which we have shared with all of you with a lot of excitement - and despite all our efforts, the current state of the game still remains far from that vision and far behind our initial planning schedule. when we shared Otherworld with all of you three years ago. Progress was made during that time - but unfortunately, a very thorough state-of-the-game review showed both the Re-Logic and 505 / Pipeworks team that, compared to the projected project, things were a little further away. from the goal we envisioned: if you take into account the massive amount of work that would remain to be completed along with the long time it would take to achieve this, and how that would greatly interfere with the pursuit of other projects on behalf of Re -Logic - it becomes clear that all this leaves things in a very undesirable state. As a result, we made the decision to stop development of Terraria: Otherworld.
Re-Logic added that it should never have announced Otherworld so soon, however the development studio reported that the ideas created for Otherworld they might see the light someday, in some future title.
